The American Diabetes Association estimates 25.8 million people in the United States, or 8.3 percent of the population, have diabetes.

About 15 percent of diabetics develop diabetic foot ulcers, which are open sores or wounds that develop as a result of poor circulation, trauma, and vascular complications.
