The Little Mermaid

Our Daughter The Mermaid

Nine-year old Shiloh Pepin wants to be just like any other girl her age, but she suffers from an extremely rare disease. She is the worlds only living mermaid.

Shiloh has Sirenomelia or mermaid syndrome, a congenital disorder that means her legs are fused together. She was born with almost no large intestine and just a small piece of her kidney. She has no rectum, no vagina and no bladder.

The film meets Shiloh and her family as she is planning to celebrate her 10th birthday; a milestone doctors said she would never reach. As she approaches this landmark her parents face a series of new dilemmas. After years of doing everything in their power just to keep her alive, how far should they now push their daughter to become more independent?

With intimate access to her family this film follows Shiloh as she leaves home on her own for the first time to attend a weeklong summer camp.

The strain of looking after her is taking its toll on her parents relationship, but when Shilohs health takes a turn for the worse they find themselves fighting for her life.

Filmed over six months this is the unforgettable story of an ordinary family living with an extraordinary condition.´╗┐ * Channel 4 * 1 x 60mins * TX: 18/05/10

The Mermaid Girl: The Last Six Months Special

Rest In Peace Shiloh Pepin/Mermaid Girl [Send It On]

From the author of youtube video:

"I will be posting a lot of Shiloh videos most likely. Her death was just so upsetting I cannot help it...send on the message of Shiloh Pepin! Shiloh had mermaid syndrome and was said to never live past a day old...but strong Shiloh lived to be 10 years old!! Sadly, her life ended October 23rd, 2009. She was always brave, confident, happy and loving. She was such an inspiration! Think of all the things we complain about...sore feet, backache, belly ache...but think about Shiloh. Everytime she got a cold it could turn into a deathly illness..which is what happened :( Shiloh had a cold that quickly turned to pneumonia. She only lived a week after the phnemonia set in. She passed on at the hospital.

Rest in peace Shiloh, I love you!"

Armand Leroi on Mutants (and Oprah's freak show)...

As an occasional cure for homsickness I log onto National Radio. Recently I heard an interview with Armand Leroi talking about his latest book Mutants. Armand is an evolutionary biologist with a specific interest in genetic deviation. What was most interesting to me was how what he talked about was more broadly applicable to cultural attitudes about deformity and perfection. Armand talked about how important mutations are right now in terms of pointing us to what specific genes are actually supposed to do. He spoke about how we're currently in a period of renewed interest in mutation and abnormality, but how that interest was one based on the correction, or normalisation, of such 'flaws'.

'Mermaid girl' to have legs split

Last Updated: Friday, 4 February, 2005, 02:27 GMT

Surgeons in Peru are preparing for an operation to separate the legs of a girl born with the rare condition "mermaid syndrome" or "sirenomelia".
Nine-month-old Milagros Cerron has been dubbed the "little mermaid" because her fused legs resemble the tail of a fish.

Usually babies with the condition die within days of birth. Milagros is one of only three known survivors.
